8 Staircase ideas to update your hallway quickly

If I asked you to visualize your home's entryway, you'd probably describe it as the area in your home where you enter and exit. You may even think of it as the place where you walk when entering or leaving your home.

Yet much like the staircase connecting floors within your home, the space leading into your house doesn't have to be just about function. Your hallway can also be a focal point, an expression of your personality, and the springboard to the rest of your interior design scheme. Whether you're just getting started on fine-tuning that room or simply looking for some fresh ideas, here are some staircases that I've chosen to help spark your imagination about what your hallways could look like!

1. MATCH YOUR STAIR CARPET TO THE HALLWAY'S

Stair carpets are used to enhance the appearance of our stairs, but why not match it to the color of your hallways? The hallway is where you enter your home first. If it's nicely decorated, the visitors are more likely to be impressed. It will also enhance the look of your house.

2. PIMP UP YOUR BANNISTERS

You probably couldn't bear to touch the banisters on your stairs or buy a replacement set that looked anything like them, but you don't have to. There are plenty of ways to pimp your banisters to make them look brand new. Everything from new handrails, spindles, and stair parts, to paint treatment, stain application and bespoke posts can breathe a new lease of life into tired staircase parts.

3. CREATE A CONTEMPORARY EFFECT WITH PAINT

Painting your staircase with white or neutral tones can make an impact on your home. It helps make the space modern and elegant, whilst adding depth to your home. It makes you want to walk upstairs to see what's behind that door. Painting your staircase can be one of the easiest ways you can refresh your home.

4. PAINT A FAUX CARPET RUNNER ON YOUR STAIRS

Stair runners are a great way to dress up your staircase and create the feeling of elegance in your home. They can cost hundreds if you hire someone to install them, but surprisingly, painting a carpet runner on your stairs is quite simple, and may only require the use of some painter's tape if your paintbrush skills aren't up to par.

5. MAXIMISE STORAGE UNDER YOUR STAIRCASE

Maximizing storage space is something we all need to think about wherever we live. It’s easy to forget about under-stair storage, but it can be one of the most practical areas of your home. Especially if you have a narrow hallway and small rooms.

Stairs are the last place you might consider dividing space, but under your staircase is actually an ideal space for storage! As you walk up the stairs, you’re taking two steps at a time.

6. ADD A GALLERY WALL TO YOUR STAIRCASE

Gallery walls, especially those hung on staircases, look beautiful and interesting. You can display your collection of items and other meaningful things that tell the story about you and your family and friends.

7. PAINT YOUR STAIRCASE IN A DRAMATIC COLOR

Painting your staircase in a dramatic color is an inexpensive way to change the look of your entire house, and it’s especially impactful if you’re starting with a white staircase. A bright color like red, yellow, or orange instantly increases the contrast in your home and can make its entrance hallway feel more like a room.

Staircases are usually forgotten, especially if you have an open plan floor plan. While their aesthetic appeal may be limited compared to other more noticeable design elements of the home, they can be transformed into a real talking point with one dramatic color choice.

8. ADD A STAIR RUNNER FOR STYLE AND COMFORT

Stair runners make your stairs more beautiful--and safer. They add a touch of warmth and style, making them a great choice for cold-weather homes.

We have already seen several posts about staircase decoration, but stair runners are still being underestimated. They are easy to fix and maintain much easier than wallpapers (no drywall dust!), they create a soft atmosphere much like carpets and can be matched with any design style. Stair runners will make your home look prettier and take it up a level or two.
